A Rich and Challenging Course of Study

High
Mowing offers a rigorous program of study that provides a solid foundation for
future academic work. The liberal arts curriculum
is presented in a way that promotes engaged and active learning. The curriculum
provides a solid base of knowledge while developing the capacities of the whole
person. High Mowing seeks to create self-motivated learners who display
creativity, insight, and empathy.
Block Classes
The
school day begins for every student with a Block class. In Block class, students, by grade, are asked to delve deeply into focused aspects of history,
literature, drama, science and mathematics. Each year of the curriculum
embodies an underlying theme that helps guide the students through their studies
in ways that harmonize with their growth and development. Block class is an essential aspect of the curriculum and an
important component of the graduation requirements.

| The
Block schedule is arranged as follows: - Nine
different subjects are studied by each grade over the course of a school year,
in periods of either three or four weeks.
- Generally,
one third of the Block classes focus on the sciences and one third focus on
historical subjects.
- The
other block classes address literature, drama, and math. (In the senior year
there is a greater emphasis on literature, and fewer history blocks.)

Track Classes
The
day continues with a series of four track classes, comprised of the usual
disciplines: Language Arts, Natural Sciences, History, Mathematics, Foreign
Languages, and Performing & Studio Arts.
- Many
of the track classes are required courses, especially for underclassmen. An
example would be Algebra I and Algebra II, which are required of all students
and are taken in a predetermined sequence.
- Other
track classes are electives and involve a higher level of knowledge or
interest, such as Calculus or World History.
- Academic
track classes are a year in length, with a few exceptions. Classes in the
Studio and Performing Arts may be taken for one, two or three trimesters in a
year.
- Most
track classes are offered on either a Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedule or a
Tuesday/Thursday schedule. (Selected track classes, such as introductory level
classes in Math and Foreign Languages, meet every day.)
- Four
years of track classes are required in the Language Arts, the Natural Sciences,
and the Performing & Studio Arts.
- Three
years of study are required in Mathematics.
- A
minimum of two years of Foreign Language and History study is also required.
- Physical
Education courses are offered in a fifth daily track class, also referred to as
the afternoon activity period. Three years of PE or team sports are required of
all students.
The Course Description Catalog gives detailed information about the courses that are being offered this year. The course selection can change from year to year, depending on student interest and needs.
High Mowing's guidance counselor works with students to make sure that all graduation requirements are met, as well as to be sure that each student is taking the classes he or she needs to meet any additional college requirements.
